Leaf season in Bedford County is really a calendar problem. There is no curbside collection, so you haul your own to a convenience center — but limbs, branches and leaves are only accepted during two seasonal windows, and the autumn one runs October 15 to November 15. Maples around here come down through late October and early November. Oaks routinely hold into December. The window closes on the easy half of the job and stays closed for the hard half.

What Bedford County does with your leaves
No curbside — seasonal drop-off windows only
The county operates 25 drop-off and full-service convenience centers, and bagged household waste goes in year-round. Yard waste does not. Limbs, branches and leaves are accepted only from April 15 to May 15 and from October 15 to November 15, and only at the full-service gated sites. Outside those two windows there is nowhere in the convenience-center system for them, and anything unbaggable goes to the Waste Management Facility regardless of the date.

- Brush, limbs and branches that cannot be bagged are prohibited at convenience centers in any season, and must go to the Waste Management Facility.
- Large trailers and truckloads are not permitted at the drop-off sites either. Those go to the Waste Management Facility too.
- Businesses and non-residents may not use the convenience centers at all.
Burning them
Virginia’s 4 PM Burning Law applies here: from February 15 through April 30, no open-air burning before 4 p.m. within 300 feet of woodland, brushland or a field of dry grass. It is a Class 3 misdemeanor with a fine up to $500, and whoever set the fire is liable for suppression costs if it escapes — regardless of the precautions taken. We could not confirm an additional Bedford County burn ordinance, and the county has used temporary emergency burn bans in dry years, so check current local status before lighting anything.

- County rules. Moneta, Montvale and Stewartsville are unincorporated parts of Bedford County. The Town of Bedford is a separate incorporated town with its own sanitation service, and it does not serve these communities.
